Marcel Theroux explores the extraordinary world of China's music stars, inspired by hip-hop, punk and K-pop but working under increasing censorship and a deeply authoritarian government.
The Chinese Communist party tries to keep a lid on all forms of cultural dissent, but in a country increasingly open to western culture, that is proving difficult. As Marcel Theroux reports, South Korean pop and punk have provided inspiration, while hip-hop has been co-opted by Eminem-style bad boys speaking out against the state. Rather more conformist are a new batch of boybands, which are often used to deliver official propaganda.
